Education is where change begins

“Education is power. It is just like a light in complete darkness.”
Ziauddin Yousafzai
Education lifts children out of poverty. It expands their universe of possibilities. It helps us all find and foster the potential that lies within; and to tap into that potential in order to drive change in our communities and in the world at large. Education is a source of light, strength, and confidence and it can change everything for a child.

Lighting the future.

Named after the Swahili word for “shine” or “blaze,” the purpose of The Waka Waka Project is to provide children with educational access and opportunities so that they can lead fuller, brighter lives.

We're different from other
education non-profits: we have kept our focus small, supporting 15 promising students from a small rural village in Tanzania, with full-ride, room-and-board scholarships and personalized education attention since 2011. Our students come from farming households that live on roughly $2 a day. Our scholarships support their immediate wellbeing with food, textbooks, health insurance, and all other schooling needs; and they help address some of the long-term cycles of poverty by fostering their potential in the classroom and beyond. Equipped with a good education and strong systems of support, our students can be a force for change within their families, their communities, their country and, hey, we can dream big, even the world.

Fund our work, fuel their dreams.

Our kids have talent and big dreams. And every child in the world has the drive and ambition to achieve those dreams; they often only need the chance to attend school and the financial and emotional support to complete their education and pursue careers in medicine, teaching, engineering- to name a few. With your support, we are making this happen for our students and what began as a small passion project fueled by our relationships with our students, has become a fruitful incubator of learning, community, and collaboration for their sustained wellbeing and success.
