We're kicking off a 90-day campaign to raise $20,000 for 2020
Here's why:
This summer marked the 9th anniversary of our first trip to Tanzania and of meeting the Waka Waka kids. It has been such an honor to see them grow up (some were just 3 yo when we met!) and most of you already know that this project has always been a long-term commitment for us. We are so grateful to everyone who has made this project possible; because of you, the kids have entirely different lives and can now dream of being engineers, teachers and doctors. We are so lucky to have friends and family that have supported us for so long and our generous recurring/monthly donors have been a godsend. To anyone who has ever donated, you have made The Waka Waka Project possible and are the reason we can hope to continue this work.
Fundraising, however, has gotten harder and harder in recent years, as school fees increase and the costs of having the kids in high school (and boarding school) add up: the cost of school is now 300% higher than when we started. We are working hard to find alternate sources of funding but are such a small organization that getting grants has been difficult and we have an urgent need to raise $20,000 in 2020. Every donation goes directly towards paying for the education of our students— it pays for tuition fees, for uniforms, shoes, socks, books, pencils, mosquito nets, laundry soap, toothbrushes, bed sheets, etc. The Waka Waka kids spend about 9-10 months of the year at school, which means most of their living expenses are in our hands. Below is a break down of annual school expenses:
Primary school annual fee: 800USD
Secondary school annual fee: 1000-1300USD (depending on the grade and school)
Boarding school supplies (bed sheets, blankets, towel, detergent, etc): 350USD
Text books: 100USD School supplies (pens, pencils, ruler, notebooks): 40USD
Uniform set (2 pairs): 110USD
Sports uniform set (2 pairs): 55USD
Hygiene kits (underwear, clothes-washing bucket, soap, toothbrush, etc): 15-35USD (the cost for girls is higher because it includes pads)
School bag: 10USD
School shoes: 15USD
The Waka Waka kids come from households that live under the global extreme poverty line of $1.90 per day. Providing the living essentials necessary for them to live at school is an added burden but also what has transformed their lives in a drastic way. In school, the kids are healthier, happier, smarter, more confident and outspoken, and able to dream of what they want for their futures. Education is opening up a world of bigger possibilities and we hope you'll join our 2020 campaign to raise the next $20,000 for their futures! If you've already donated this year, thank you! If you are considering it, we hope this nudges you to do so! And thank you for your support!
